The Challenge

Working within the context of a World Heritage Site, the Grade I listed Llangollen bridge, the River Dee and challenging levels, we worked closely with the community and local Dinas Bran school to help reveal four historic highways into the town and improve pedestrian connections between them. The Four Great Highways are made up of the Llangollen Canal, the old Ruabon to Barmouth Railway line, the River Dee and the A5 Holyhead Road.

Our Role

Our role involved extensive community engagement from the outset, working with the community to understand what works and what needed priority investment and also providing longer term aspirations for the town. The Urbanists provided Public Realm design, co-ordination and engagement consultation working closely with Burroughs and Denbighshire County Council.

The Outcome

Based on the earlier community engagement, and working closely with stakeholders, we provided a series of design interventions across key areas namely the Llangollen Wharf, Holyhead Road and Lower Dee Mill Park. The works in each of these key areas included seating, access and signage, enhancement, repair and reimagining Lower Dee Mill Park, Improved visitor signage at key locations
