Mitchell Court, Tonypandy
Project Information
Transforming the former Mitchell Court site into a vibrant & sustainable community central to Tonypandy
The Challenge
The Urbanists were appointed to lead the detailed planning application for Trivallis, redeveloping the former Mitchell Court site in central Tonypandy. This project required a collaborative approach, fusing urban design and architecture to create a viable, accessible, and vibrant community of WDQR-compliant houses and apartments.
A contemporary design approach was central to the vision, ensuring a high-quality, modern living environment that responded sensitively to the site's context. Navigating the challenging topography required innovative design solutions to create a well-integrated and accessible development. Limited site access demanded careful planning of movement and servicing, while the site's adjacency to the bus station required a thoughtful approach to mitigate noise and environmental impacts.
Through considered placemaking, high-quality materials, and a strong emphasis on sustainability, the scheme balances these constraints to deliver a well-connected, contemporary, and affordable residential development that enhances the wider townscape.
Our Role
Our role in the redevelopment of Mitchell Court encompassed urban design, architecture, and landscape architecture, to ensure a cohesive and viable development that aligns seamlessly with the surrounding Tonypandy context. The bespoke architectural design prioritises contemporary simplicity, balanced proportions, and a strong identity that both references and complements the existing townscape.
This tailored approach to design integrates the existing external green spaces to the west of the site with outdoor communal facilities, encouraging physical activity and fostering community interaction. High-quality public spaces and carefully considered landscaping contribute to a welcoming and vibrant environment, reinforcing a sense of place and belonging for future residents.
The scheme delivers 50 WDQR-compliant homes, including 42 one and two-bedroom apartments and 8 houses, meeting local housing needs while enhancing the community. The massing strategy carefully balances housing and commercial requirements, providing appropriate scale and density settling into the site’s surroundings.

The Outcome
The comprehensive design process has led to a favourable Pre-application Consultation and a subsequent detailed planning submission of a high-quality development proposal with hopes of on site delivery later in 2025.
